October is National Bully Prevention Awareness Month

Understanding and Addressing BullyingBullying is a targeted, repeated, and aggressive behavior intended to harm another person, either physically or mentally, with the goal of gaining power over the person being targeted. Bullying is characterized by:

  • Repetition: The behavior occurs repeatedly over time.
  • Intentionality: The actions are deliberate, and the target has not provoked the bully.
  • Power Imbalance: There is a real or perceived power difference between the individuals involved, which can stem from physical strength, access to information, or social standing.


Peer Conflict vs. Bullying
It’s important to distinguish between peer conflict and bullying. Peer conflict involves children of equal power or friendship, is often accidental, and results in an equal emotional reaction from both parties. Unlike bullying, peer conflict does not involve a power imbalance or the intent to control.
Peer conflict can be a positive learning experience, helping children develop important skills such as conflict resolution, negotiation, and problem-solving.

Why Reporting is Critical

We cannot address issues we are unaware of. It’s vital for parents and students to report incidents of bullying so we can take action to stop the behavior. If an incident is reported, you can expect communication from the school as we work together to resolve the issue.
Responding to Bullying as a Parent: Support & Report

  • Support: Maintain open communication with your child, listen actively to their experiences, and avoid placing blame.
  • Report: Encourage your child to report bullying incidents, and follow up to ensure the report has been made. You can also report the incident directly to teachers and school administration.


Reporting Resource – SafeUT App
The SafeUT app provides immediate, confidential access to licensed counselors who can assist with any crisis or concern. The app offers real-time crisis intervention through live chat and a confidential tip line, available to students, parents/guardians, and educators.


What is Canyons School District Doing?
Our schools are dedicated to helping students use digital tools responsibly. Digital Citizenship standards are integrated into daily instruction, and the District sponsors annual events that involve parents in promoting safe online behavior.

  • Internet Safety: Canyons uses a web filter to block access to inappropriate content on District devices and networks. Categories such as pornography, social networking, gambling, weapons, and adult content are restricted, and safe search settings are enabled.
  • Monitoring: Teachers can visually monitor and control student Chromebook use in the classroom, ensuring that devices are used appropriately and that students stay on task.
  • Social Media Restrictions: Access to platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook is blocked on school campuses.

Focus on Digital Citizenship

Canyons School District Digital Citizenship Week will be October 14-16, 2024. Students will partake in activities that empower them to seek balance in their technology use and to be aware of their online actions. Connect with us throughout the week!

Brain Booster October News

What is a Brain Booster?

There are so many fun and exciting things to learn about in school, life, and in the world around us. Brain Boosters are grade specific classes geared to enhancing learning through: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Physical Education, Visual Arts, Library/Media, and Theater/Drama.

Students attend each content weekly to explore and engage in activities that enrich life skills, such as creativity, collaboration, and their own well-being. These classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Thanksgiving Meals

Applications for Thanksgiving Meals are available in the front office of the school.

Halloween Costume Parade

We are celebrating Halloween on Friday, October 25. We will have our Halloween Costume Parade at 9:30am, starting in the school and then moving outside, weather permitting. Families can watch our parade outside in front of the school. The parking lot will close at 9:00am so that families can line up along the north parking lot to watch. A few notes about costumes:

  • Please know that costumes are optional. In choosing a costume to wear to school, note that costumes should not interfere with learning or have accessories that can be used as weapons or weapon facsimiles. Costumes may not include a full face mask or have a head covering that conceals the student’s identity. Face painting is allowed, but must be done at home prior to coming to school.

Friday, October 25: Halloween Costume Parade starting at 9:30am.
