Chief Example for Others (CEO) Character Trait for October: Respect
A Message from our Principal
As we move through the school year, I want to take a moment to emphasize the critical role that school attendance and parental involvement play in your child’s success. Every day at school is an opportunity for your child to learn, grow, and build the foundation for a bright future. When students attend regularly, they engage more fully with the curriculum, connect with their peers, and form positive habits that will last a lifetime.
At the same time, your involvement as parents is equally important. When families partner with teachers and the school community, it strengthens the support system around each student. Have a conversation with your child, ask them what made them smile today, or something new they learned. Reading together with them for 20 minutes a night and having a conversation about what they read as well as attending school events like Family STEAM night, shows your child that their education matters.
I also encourage you to regularly check ParentSquare for important communication from the school and your child’s teacher. Staying up to date on announcements, events, and class information helps ensure that you are always in the loop. Teachers should be sending home weekly messages letting you know what they are learning that week. It’s a great conversation starter if your child doesn’t like to talk about school. If you ever have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way.
Together, by ensuring consistent attendance and staying involved, we can create a strong environment for every student to thrive. Let’s work together to make this a successful year for all!Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Fall Family Night is Tuesday Night!
We are so excited for our Fall Family Night focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) on Tuesday, October 22!
Teachers and staff and some 5th grade students will be facilitating fun learning activities for students and families who attend the event. Construct a ramp for toy cars or try to code a “bot.” Try to create electricity or build a tower. Assemble a chain reaction with dominoes or challenge your partner to a game of math dominoes. Create art with pixels or other objects. Or do it all and more!
3rd – 5th Grade students have been working hard on creating Public Service Announcements in their STEM classes and these will be on display for families to view.
Do you want to support your student with math but just don’t know how to do it? Math strategies have changed since many of us were kids! Mrs. Kraft will have sessions for families throughout the night to teach parents how to support their students with multiplication strategies.
Food Trucks will open in front of the school starting at 5:30pm; each participant will receive one $2 coupon that can be used to purchase a taco, empanada, or mini arepa, or as a discount for other food purchases.
The event itself will go from 6:00 – 8:00pm inside the school. Please plan to join us!
Flu Vaccines Available at School
It is still a great time to get vaccinated against influenza and help protect you student from the flu this season.
We currently have both VFC injectable flu and VFC flu mist available. If your student is covered by Medicaid, CHIP, or is uninsured they qualify for the VFC vaccine program and there is no cost for the vaccine.
Please reach out to Nurse Tara at 385-261-9331 to set up an appointment. She can also send a consent home and administer the vaccine during the school day if preferred.
Halloween Costume Parade
We are celebrating Halloween on Friday, October 25. We will have our Halloween Costume Parade at 9:30am, starting in the school and then moving outside, weather permitting. Families can watch our parade outside in front of the school. The parking lot will close at 9:00am so that families can line up along the north parking lot to watch. A few notes about costumes:
- Please know that costumes are optional. In choosing a costume to wear to school, note that costumes should not interfere with learning or have accessories that can be used as weapons or weapon facsimiles. Costumes may not include a full face mask or have a head covering that conceals the student’s identity. Face painting is allowed, but must be done at home prior to coming to school.

Hillcrest High School is hosting a Trunk or Treat event on Wednesday, October 30, from 6:30-8:00pm. The event is open to children ages 12 and under, and they must be accompanied by a high school student or adult.
