New School Safety Requirements
As part of new school safety requirements mandated by the Utah Legislature, all visitors—including parents, volunteers, vendors, and contractors—must check in at the school office and present a photo ID before entering our schools. The process is quick and designed with one goal in mind: keeping students and staff safe by ensuring we know who is in our buildings at all times. After checking in, visitors will receive a badge that should be worn while on campus.
There will be some exceptions for large school-sponsored events held after school hours. Parents picking up students, classroom volunteers, and anyone conducting business at the school will need to follow these procedures. We appreciate your patience and partnership as we implement these state-required safety measures. By working together, we can help ensure our schools remain safe, secure, and welcoming places for every student.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served from 7:50-8:10am in the cafeteria. Please remind your students that if they are going to get breakfast, they should go straight to the cafeteria during this time.
If students arrive after 8:10am, they will be able to get a bagged breakfast to take with them to class after 8:15am. Please note that they are missing class time so try to have them arrive before 8:10 and remind them to get breakfast right away.
Adult English Classes
Learn English and meet new people! Our Family Learning Center is once again offering free English classes for adults here on the Midvale Elementary School campus. Classes begin Tuesday, September 8 (not September 1 as previously scheduled). Basic English classes are held from 8:40-9:30am, and Intermediate English classes are held from 9:40-10:40am.

Family Resources in our School and Community
Everyone faces challenges at one time or another, and navigating the resources available can be a challenge on its own. One of the easiest ways to find needed resources is to call 211 and they can assist you with the most up-to-date information and link you with what you are looking for. Here at the school, we are able to link students with a variety of resources throughout the school year. A few are listed below; others will become available throughout the school year so please watch your ParentSquare Monday Mustang Messages for more information.
Food for the Weekend: Students are provided a bag of easy-to-prepare items to help make sure they have food over the weekends when school lunch is not available to them. Please contact Heidi Sanger if you are interested in your student receiving a bag of food each Friday (or last day before the weekend).
Free Groceries through the Utah Food Bank’s School Pantry: One Tuesday each month, the Utah Food Bank comes to our school, and students and families can take a large bag of food home. The dates are listed on the school calendar and we will also let you know through ParentSquare Monday Mustang Messages.

Book Blitz Jr. for 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders
We are bringing Book Blitz Jr. back to Midvale Elementary for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who LOVE reading!
Teams will meet after school monthly in September, October, November, and December, and weekly after that to prepare for the competition. Students read a minimum of 4-6 books by the beginning of March from a selected list of 12, write summaries, work together as teams, and compete on Battle Day (mid-March) using their collective knowledge of the content of the books — Jeopardy style! The 4th-5th grade winners of our school level Battle Day competition will participate in a district-wide competition in early April. The primary purpose of Book Blitz Jr. is to foster students’ love of reading by introducing them to a wide variety of books by acclaimed authors in multiple formats.

Get Involved in the School Community Council
Serving on the School Community CouncilServing on our School Community Council is a wonderful way for parents and teachers to contribute and help improve academic performance at our school. The school receives an annual dividend from the school trust lands. Our council decides how these funds will be used. Last year our school received $109,511.98 from the School LAND Trust Program. The council reviews and prepares other academic plans for our students each year. All plans are reviewed for final approval by our school board. Councils also act in an advisory capacity to school and school district administrations.
Qualifications
Every public school in Utah has a School Community Council. The councils are made up of school employees who are elected by employees and parents of students attending the school. Membership terms are for two years. Elections are held at the beginning of each school year.
Parent members must have a student attending the school at least one of the two years of their term of service. Employees must be employed by the school district at the school.

Elections will be held at our first School Community Council meeting of the year on September 14, at 4:00pm, in the Media Center at Midvale Elementary School.
