Chief Example for Others (CEO) Character Traits for January: Determination and Hard Work

Important Information from the School District

This information was sent to families last week; we just want to share it again to ensure that everyone receives it:

Important Information
Canyons District families,

This week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have been granted clearance to enforce immigration laws in places previously considered off limits, such as schools, churches, and hospitals. Canyons District recognizes that this recent change to federal immigration policy may have prompted questions or concerns. Please know that Canyons District:

  • Remains committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment to all students.
  • Will continue to follow laws guaranteeing that all children in the United States, regardless of their immigration status, have a right to a free and appropriate education.
  • Does not collect or share information about the immigration status of students.
  • Encourages parent and guardians to contact the Front Office staff at their child’s school to make sure their contact information and their student’s emergency contact information is accurate and current. Emergency contacts can be family members OR a trusted adult designated by the guardian and can be updated by speaking with the secretary at the school.
  • Will have counselors and wellness staff at all our schools who are available if students experience any anxiety, stress, or fears in response to changes to federal immigration enforcement guidelines.

Please reach out to your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns. Families also can reach out via email at communications@canyonsdistrict.org

Career Day

Friday, February 7th, from 9:00 to 10:15 AM is our Midvale Elementary Career Day! Families, we need YOU!!! We still need several volunteers in order to host this valuable experience!

We are asking for volunteers to speak about their careers, so come share your expertise with our students! Volunteers can be parents, guardians, grandparents, or friends of the family. Students love to have their loved ones come to their classrooms.

Click or visit the link https://cnyns.org/3ThwlEF for more information and to sign up.

Thanks for your support. We look forward to seeing you there!

WIDA Access Testing Begins Soon!

To our families of Multilingual Learners (children who are, or have been, consistently exposed to multiple languages especially at home):

WIDA ACCESS Testing started today. As noted in last week’s message, the WIDA ACCESS test measures our students’ English language proficiency across four language domains: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

The testing schedule will be as follows:
WIDA ACCESS: Reading and Listening Test
Week of January 27th-31st
WIDA ACCESS: Speaking Test
Week of February 3rd-7th
WIDA ACCESS: Writing Test
Week of February 10th-14th

The aim of this test is to give teachers a better understanding of each student’s current language skills and identify areas where they may need further support. This will allow teachers to better tailor their instruction more effectively to student need.

Below, are some good reminders for the upcoming test:

Get good rest during the weeks of testing.
Eat a healthy breakfast before testing.
Do your best! There’s no need to study, as this test measures what students already know.

We are excited for our students to participate in this important assessment. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your support!
