Attendance

School Success Goes Hand in Hand with Being in School Every Day! Did you Know?

  • Many absences, even in Kindergarten, can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing just one days or two every month can make it harder to learn to read by the third grade.
  • Student with too many absences struggle to catch up, even with take-home assignments.
  • Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves.

What Can You Do?

  • Develop a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Avoid missing school unless a child is truly sick and seek help is chronic illness is a challenge.
  • Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teacher, school support staff, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • If your student is going to be absent, please notify the school by calling 801-826-8725.

Midvale Elementary Attendance Plan

2024-2025

Attendance is a team effort at Midvale Elementary.
We know that too many absences, excused or unexcused, can keep students from succeeding in school and in life.
How many days missed is too many?
Missing 10% of the school year, the equivalent of about 2 days per month, can impact a student’s learning and growth.

Step 1: Accurately Mark Attendance
Teachers and staff accurately mark attendance each day, including partial attendance such as tardies.
Tardies will be marked by the office starting at 8:35 AM.

Step 2: Classroom-Based Incentives
Teachers facilitate classroom-based incentives to encourage attendance and celebrate success.

Step 3: School-Wide Incentives
School-wide incentives are implemented along with messaging to remind families of the importance of good attendance.

Step 4: Notify Families of Absences
Families are notified by letter after 5 absences.
Teachers continue to build a positive working relationship with each student and family to address attendance concerns.
After 10 absences, a letter is sent home requesting a conference with the family.

Step 5: Student Support Team
After 15 absences, another letter is sent out with a conference time already set.
The student is referred to the Student Support Team,
which meets to discuss further supports and interventions for the student and family.

Midvale Elementary Attendance Policy

Chronic absenteeism is shown to result in students having difficulty learning to read by third grade and is the single greatest determining factor in high school graduation rates. When students miss too much school for ANY reason, the result is a student falling behind.
Midvale Mustangs are expected to be in class on time and ready to learn each day.

TARDIES (T/W): Our teachers maximize every minute they have with their students. Students are expected to be in class prior to the tardy bell at 8:20am. Students entering the building after this time will be marked “T” or “Tardy.” Students who arrive more than 15 min after the bell will be marked “W” or “Way-Late Tardy.” Excessive tardiness impacts a child’s ability to join in on important daily routines and structures in their classroom communities.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES (A): Absences are considered “Unexcused” until they have been cleared by the student’s family.

GUARDIAN EXCUSED ABSENCES (G): Absences are “Guardian Excused” when the family notifies the school regarding their student’s absence.

EXCUSED ABSENCES (E): An absence is “Excused” when a doctor note is provided when the student returns to campus.

EXCUSED EDUCATIONAL LEAVE (V): With administrative approval,10 days prior notice, and completion of any teacher-assigned work, a student can receive “Excused Educational Leave.” Educational Leave Forms can be found in the front office.

Please contact the Front Office to excuse absences: 801-826-8725
