- Final Discussion of Land Trust and Teacher and Student Success Plans for the 25-26 school year
Proposed plans were presented last month to SCC, BLT, staff; Steve signed them today since he was not present at the last meeting.
- School Safety Report
Carolee reported that last month’s drill was CO2 drill; this month we will be doing the Great Utah Shakeout (earthquake) on April 18 at 10:15am.
- Discussion on Digital Access
The District has asked to get feedback from each school community about digital access for students. It has been presented to faculty/staff to seek feedback, and we would like to discuss with SCC’s to get parent feedback. Carolee reviewed the required information from the school board / District with SCC members. CSD tries to partner with parents in several ways in regard to use of technology at school. CSD did take immediate action in some areas and has taken additional steps in other areas.
There are options being presented community-wide:
- No change.
- All elementary-level Chromebooks will be put on the “highly restrictive” level of filtering. This will be CSD’s standard.
- All elementary-level Chromebooks will be put on the “highly restrictive” level of filtering – but parents can opt into less-restrictive settings for their own children. It’s the reverse of current practice.
Discussion: Are the filters in place if students take their Chromebooks home? What if students give someone else their password?
Stephanie noted that teachers have Lanschool so they can monitor student activity and can limit/filter more extensively; they also really only use it for reading and math. One challenge can be kids looking up Google images/search but that can’t be blocked so teachers must be monitoring; certain topics will trigger a discussion with the principal! Discussed the importance of teachers as well as parents teaching Digital Citizenship.
Our SCC will need to vote on an option; surveys were also sent out to all parents and staff District-wide. Kikey made a motion for option 2; seconded by Lyndzi. All in favor.
Additional question: Should CSD eliminate the ability for elementary students to access their student accounts during a defined set of hours after the school day is over and on weekends.
Some students use SORA; some parents ask them to do learning activities or finish school projects at home. Steve said he would be against the idea of limiting access at certain times; other parents agreed. Could parents request that their own kids’ accounts be locked down at a certain time but not have it for all kids? Jason noted that if his student is going to be on the computer he would RATHER that they be on their school account!
- Other Items:
Jackson introduced himself as our School Board representative.
- Adjourn
Stephanie motioned to adjourn the meeting; Caidy and Kikey seconded. Meeting adjourned at 4:52pm.
Next meeting: May 12, 2025
