Motion to approve minutes by Amanda. Seconded by Haydee. Approved.

Thank you to Steve and Council – Lori

Lori thanked Steve and the council for the beautiful letter to our teachers after our last meeting in regards to the recent award and all of their hard work. Lori also thanked the council for support and flexibility and welcoming her.

Drill Update – February 23rd – Shelter in Place, Secure the Perimeter  –   Lori

Shelter in Place is “business as usual.” It means there is an outside threat, not inside. This will take place tomorrow.

Digital Citizenship

Henry Hartzler is our Digital Citizenship coordinator. This year has been a little strange. Last week was technically Digital Citizenship Week but it was cut short by a holiday and a snow day. Lori reviewed the Slides presentation that was put together by the District and Mr. Hartzler. https://youtu.be/GayXetx7KgI (Quick review video)

Henry Hartzler sends out monthly emails to teachers about incorporating lessons into their classrooms.

Example – February’s Email:

This month we are celebrating Digital Citizenship Week,  a great opportunity to ensure that your students are developing the skills needed to become positive digital citizens.  As a district, we have put together some lessons for you to use, if you would like to celebrate Digital Citizenship week February 16th-18th. You can find those lessons here. Here is your February Digital Citizenship Tip: Hang this poster up in your room to help remind students of five important characteristics of a good digital citizen.

District is encouraging use of the Common Sense Media website for parents and teachers (commonsensemedia.org).

For Grades K-2, the focus is on Privacy. For Grades 3-5, the focus is on Leaving Your Digital Footprint and Cyberbullying. Amanda noted that the first thing they talk about at the beginning of the year in 4th grade is to think before you send – you can’t take it back.

Haydee asked how the plan is being communicated to Spanish-speaking families. Lori indicated that in March’s Newsletter, she will be talking about Digital Citizenship that will go out in paper format as well as ParentSquare. Heidi can ask the Family Learning Center teachers to make sure to cover Digital Citizenship, and Lori suggested putting up posters out there as well. Lori will put tips in the next three newsletters. Haydee asked how parents can see what the students are going over in the lessons; Amanda noted that it should be on their CANVAS pages for the older students. Heidi sent the link for commonsensemedia.org to the SCC members; it has resources for educators as well as families in English and Spanish.

Plan for DCC moving forward – Lori

Lori went through the Digital Citizenship Plan survey with the SCC to ensure that all areas were covered. All areas were approved.

Land Trust and TSSP Plan 2021-2022  We will continue this discussion during the March 22, 2021 meeting.  (Final Plan is due on April 13th)

Lori noted that there aren’t a lot of changes with this because most of our money is invested in the people who support our students. She noted that she would like to add some interventionists.

    • Beginning to talk with teachers about specific grade level goals for next year. Meeting with district support and Achievement Coaches on Wednesday to analyze data and start problem solving.
    • Major focus will still be literacy.
  • TSSP and Land Trust proposed spending:  Salaries and Benefits for Interventionists, Dreambox licenses, BB Art Tech

Current Literacy Goal:  By June of  2021, 60% of Midvale students in each grade will have made typical or above typical growth in reading fluency and math computation as measured by Acadience benchmark assessments and progress monitoring.

Lori would like to make grade-specific goals under this overarching goal. She is talking with teachers as well as District and Achievement Coaches about this. We will review this again in March. The final plan will be due April 13.

Haydee asked how Special Education enters into this plan. When kids who receive Special Education services go to the SPED classroom, where there are 2 district-funded SPED classroom aides, the interventionists work with the other students during this time. If there are extra funds, Lori would like to add another aide in that SPED classroom. Haydee asked about numbers of SPED students; Lori noted that 84 students receive SPED services. We do have a number of students being screened for SPED services.

Haydee mentioned the concern about students being behind due to COVID. Lori noted that District-wide, data showed that the dip wasn’t significant. Data from Midvale shows a little bigger dip but not what we were expecting. It was also discussed that Midvale has a unique situation when considering the needs of English language learners.

Cell Tower Funds: ($2,700) Lori would like to use this account for Parent Teacher Conference meals, and help PTA with Teacher Appreciation this year. Request from Principal Reynolds to move $700 into Principal’s Discretion Account for Friday Fun (teacher morale), and student mask-wearing incentives, in addition to the PTA conference meals and teacher appreciation.  Motion led by Amanda, Haydee was second and Kwame also agreed to the motion.  Personal donation of $500 dollars to add to the Principal’s Discretion fund by an anonymous parent.

Meeting Adjourn – Steve

Motion to adjourn the meeting and the attendees were all in favor. Unanimous vote.  Meeting ended at 5:15 pm

Next meeting on March 15th at 4:00pm on Zoom

Submitted by: Heidi Sanger; contribution also from Haydee Franco
