School Community Council Meeting Agenda/Minutes

Midvale Elementary Media Center

In Attendance: Carolee Mackay, Jason Baxter, Heidi Sanger, Alyssa Watson-Siriboe, Kikey Fernandez, Mont Millerberg

Meeting was called to order at 4:06pm by Alyssa.

Agenda Items:

  1. Welcome

  2. Discussion and vote on approval of the October 30, 2023, meeting minutes

Kikey made a motion to approve the minutes; Jason seconded. All approved; motion carried.

  1. Land Trust / TSSP updates and review

We have used about 50% of our Land Trust money; all of it is going towards interventionists. Carolee is watching this closely. She has moved some salary costs to the Title I budget. The TSSP funds are being spent appropriately, trying to get all of the consumable products purchased within the next month.

Carolee reviewed the goals and middle-of-the-year progress by each grade level, both in ELA and in math. We are really looking at how to support 1st and 2nd grade right now to move closer to their goals. Last week and this week, the instructional coaches have been doing a deep data dive with teachers to make appropriate adjustments.

  1. Initial discussion for Land Trust/TSSP plans for the 2024-2025 school year

We have started discussing goals for next year in BLT; the grade level team leads are to talk to their teams and bring back discussions to BLT. Most grades will keep similar goals; each will continue to focus on proficiency and growth. So far, leads are wanting to continue spending the funds on staffing; in addition, newcomer support and student incentives. Next month, Carolee will present the draft to the SCC.

Carolee asked if there are other areas that the SCC would like to focus on. Discussed that having math interventionists can be challenging due to curriculum and different ways of teaching. Kikey asked about opportunities for families to learn how to help students at home with their math. Savvas is an opportunity. Some parents noted that they can’t read the Spanish math homework so it is challenging to assist their students.

  1. Elementary Planning Proposals

Elementary teachers across the district have been asking for more planning time. The district put together a task force to explore options for increasing elementary planning time. Carolee reviewed the timeline that is in place; at this time, principals are seeking feedback from SCC’s about the proposals to bring back to the district. Reviewed the proposals: Daily Planning Time, Extended Planning Block, Assistant Principals/Admin Interns, IEP Block Scheduling.

Alyssa noted that virtual Fridays are not a good plan for her as well as many families, and not much learning will happen without face-to-face instruction with a teacher. The group agreed that we are not in support of changes to Fridays (either virtual or shortened days). The group did not feel that a 10 minute change to the school day would impact us very much, and agreed that more brain booster time would be a positive thing for students.

  1. School Accountability Report

We received the SAR in October. We have exited out of two areas of Targeted School Improvement – hooray! The only area of concern that we are still working on exiting out of is Students with Disabilities. We received Commendable status in Growth, Developing status in Achievement and English Learner Progress. If we actually received a grade like we used to, we would be a C school, which is a great achievement!

  1. Safe Walking Route review

This was added to the agenda due to receiving feedback from the District and City/community, which Carolee reviewed.

  1. Adjourn

Carolee noted that she would like to do the SCC elections in the spring versus the fall; this will be added to the agenda. Kikey noted that it has been a good experience to be on the SCC.

Alyssa made a motion to adjourn; Jason seconded. Meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm.

Next meeting: February 26, 2024, 4:00pm MES Media Center
