SCC Meeting Minutes

2. Approval of 1/9/20 minutes                                        Steve Brown

Chip voted to defer the approval of the 1/9/20 minutes to March; Steve seconded.

3. Land Trust/TSSA Plans (Teacher and Student Success Account)         Chip Watts

Reviewed last year’s plan and CBM data. Goal: By May of 2020, 60% of Midvale Elementary School students in each grade will achieve their expected level of growth in reading fluency as measured by curriculum-based measurements (CBM) assessments.

Reviewed Action Plan Steps as identified in last year’s plan.

i.e. Quality Tier 1 reading instruction (ex. Close reading)

  1. Ensure that all students receive quality Tier 1 reading instruction every day planned using the Utah State Core Standards (ex. Close reading)
  2. Ensure that all students receive instruction in small groups to meet individual skills needs
  3. Employ the use of adaptive technological resources such as Imagine Learning in skills-based interventions (SBI) and English language development (ELD) instruction
  4. Identify students below benchmark and progress monitor their growth.
  5. Hire 7 Reading Interventionists to provide small group skills based instruction in regular and Dual Immersion classrooms ($90,000)
  6. Train Reading Interventionists to utilize research based resources during SBI time to have the greatest impact on student learning. The following CSD approved programs will be used: RTI (Response to Intervention) Kit, 95% group.
  7. Teachers and Reading Interventionists will participate in regular professional development…

Reviewed land trust funding/spending. Last year we were also notified that we received about $90,000 more under TSSA. 2019-20 allocation: $116,875. We have about $50,000 to spend.

Proposal: To spend on technology to support skills based instruction and up to $2 per student in behavioral incentives per Land Trust Guidelines.

For technology: replace outdated technology and ensure 1:1 ratio technology

Bryant asked about offering some of the older technology to some of our families rather than surplus them.

For behavioral incentives: items for our Mustang Buckaroo School Store

Kwame asked about offering coding to students. Chip stated that we have started to add some after school programming that at this time is available to just 3rd-5th; hopefully this can grow. 

Chip shared the Action Steps of the expenditures that were added to the plan in June of 2019. This included funds for Brain Booster restructuring plan, instructional assistants for ELA, and Dreambox subscription. Discussed whether there is a way to add a math goal in addition to ELA. We can; we need to figure out a way to measure growth. Chip proposed using some of the extra funds to pay for some of the Saxon Phonics materials needed. Another proposal is to move one of the interventionists….. (Chip please add to this)

Land Trust funds must be academic-based other than the 2% that can be behavioral. TSSP is more broad at this point.

Our Land Trust allocation for the 2020-21 school year is forecasted to be $88,869. TSSP should be about the same as this year as well.

Steve: Are we going to stick with just the reading goal or would we like Chip to work with the BLT on a potential math goal as well. Bryant noted that he would prefer to wait until we meet the reading goal, since we are so close. Others agreed.

Steve: Do we want to push the reading goal from 60% to 65% for next year? Discussion ensued. 60% seems like a good goal and it would be great to be able to celebrate achieving that.

Chip shared the letter from the State that showed a letter grade C. He also shared that he will be transitioning to be the principal at Draper Middle School next year for those who had not heard. The new principal will be Lori Reynolds, who is currently principal at Sprucewood Elementary School. Lori is invited to come to our next SCC meeting.

Discussed more transitioning of McKinney-Vento students this year.

Steve: Think about safety nets. We want to have wording in both plans to be prepared for needed adjustments.

We will be reviewing the plan again next month for a second read and then voting on it.
