ATTENDEES:  Lori Reynolds, Steve Brown, Heidi Sanger, Margaret McCann, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Maria Guizar, Haydee Franco

AGENDA

  • Call Meeting to Order –   Steve
    • Steve called the meeting to order at 4:04pm.

    • Motion from Margaret to approve the minutes; seconded by Maria. All approved.
  • Updated Bylaws- Vote –   Steve
    • Haydee noted that she had a chance to review the changes; she asked for clarification on who suggested the changes. Steve explained. Margaret moved to approve the update bylaws; Haydee seconded. All in favor. Motion approved. 
  • Middle of the Year Data Review – Lori 
    • A big responsibility of our SCC is to review our goals and how our TSSP and LandTrust dollars are being spent. Lori shared the Middle of Year Growth Data/Benchmark data. Maria provided an additional explanation on how we look at progress and growth. Literacy (using Acadience Pathways of Progress data): 
    • Kindergarten (NWF, nonsense word fluency): 51% have made typical or above typical growth. (I.e. kids are well on their way to meeting the 65% end of the year goal). 
    • 1st grade (WWR, whole words read): 69% have made typical or above typical growth. 75% is the end of the year goal. 
    • 2nd grade (ORF, oral reading fluency): 57% have made typical or above typical growth. 60% is the end of year goal. 
    • 3rd grade (Reading Composite Score): 42% have made typical or above typical growth. 60% is the end of year goal. 
    • 4th grade (Reading Composite Score): 63% have made typical or above typical growth. 60% is the end of year goal.
    • 5th grade (ORF, oral reading fluency): 77% have made typical or above typical growth in ORF. 80% is the end of year goal. 33% of students are at benchmark at this time; the goal is for 70% of them to be at benchmark by the end of the year. We are moving students out of the well-below category, however. 
    • The State looks at the Pathways progress.
    • Math:
    • Kindergarten (Beginning Quantity Discrimination): 55% are at or above benchmark. 70% is the end of year goal.
    • 1st grade (math computation): 71% have made typical or above typical growth. 75% is the end of year goal.
    • 2nd grade (math computation): 49% have made typical or above typical growth. 50% is the end of year goal.
    • 3rd grade (math computation, and concepts and applications): 37% have made typical or above typical growth. 50% is the end of year goal.
    • 4th grade (math composite): 29% are at or above benchmark. Goal is to increase the number of students who meet benchmark by 20% by the end of the year. 
    • 5th grade (math computation): 63% have made expected growth or better in math computation; 70% is the end of year goal. 28% of students are at or above benchmark; 50% is the end of year goal.
    • Discussed the data. Steve noted that it would be beneficial to have each grade still have a growth goal even if they have a benchmark goal – to have both is beneficial. The growth from this year is encouraging.
  • TSSP Update (We will not need to amend this as previously thought) – Lori
    • Because of the way we wrote the plan previously, we will not need to amend the plan. Additional funds will be used to purchase classroom supplies (manipulatives for each student), to replace SMART boards with IPads, AppleTV’s, and to purchase new Chromebooks for students.
    • Kwame asked for the contact information for the District contacts regarding getting coding into the schools. Steve directed him to Mont Millerberg, our School Board representative. He noted that he is taking it beyond just this school district.
  • DLI Update  – Lori 
    • Lori referenced the message that went out on ParentSquare about the change in DLI starting next year. When the restructuring plan was made a few years ago, it called for expanding the DLI program every year to 4 DLI classes per grade level. Over the past year in our Building Leadership Team meetings, we started hearing that teachers for our non-dual classrooms are getting over-burdened. The classroom sizes are not balanced. In some of our non-dual classrooms we have 20-25 students and in the same grade level dual classrooms we have maybe 15 students. In addition, the new students that come into our school will typically move into those larger non-dual classrooms so there is a lot more happening in those classrooms. Lori showed an example of the transitions in and out of just one non-dual classroom since October. She also noted that we don’t want to lose teachers because there aren’t enough students for a classroom, nor do we want to lose teachers because the non-dual classrooms are so taxing in the current situation. The BLT agreed on making a change, and this was taken to the District for feedback and support.
    • The plan is for next year that Kindergarten will have only 2 classrooms of DLI rather than 4. Our 3rd graders in DLI can be supported by just 2 classrooms in 4th grade, so 4th grade will stay with 2 classrooms of DLI. 5th grade will stay with 2 classrooms of DLI. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades will have 4 classrooms of DLI next year. The year after, 1st grade will be just 2 classrooms of DLI, and so on. 
    • Discussed concerns about the changes and the options that have been considered.
  • January Safety Drill – Lori 
    • Fire Drill went well. In February we did Shelter-in-Place. March will be Hazardous Materials.
  • Middle School Students Plan for Afterschool  – Lori
    • We have had a lot of problems with middle school students on the property before we are even dismissed. Lori met with Mindi, the middle school principal. Middle school students will not be allowed on our campus until our bell rings at 3:05pm. This will be shared with parents at both schools and there will be signage.
  • Upcoming Events 
    • Read Across America Day is tomorrow. Conferences are at the end of the week. Family Literacy Night on March 29. 
  • Meeting Adjourn
    • Margaret made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 5:51pm.
