Review and approve minutes from November’s meeting

The draft minutes were posted on the school website. Lori noted that the last boundary open house had to be rescheduled to February 3. Alyssa made a motion to approve the minutes. Maria seconded.

Review SCC roster and information for accuracy, update any changes

Lori asked everyone to review their roster information. If you do receive any emails from someone posing as Lori or Steve, please let Lori know right away. Alyssa noted that her last name should state Watson-Siriboe. No other changes needed.

Safety drill report for Dec./Jan.

The December drill was to be a faculty training (education/awareness on active shooters) which will be embedded into the January PD. The January drill is a fire drill.

AP Carolee Mackay-Discuss Child Access Routing Plan (SNAP) Signatures Required (3)

The SNAP Plan was presented by Lori as Carolee was unable to attend. Every walking route must be written out and then a map is developed by the District office. The Risk Management office reviews the plan after it is submitted to them and gives feedback to the plan. Lori noted that there is a spot of concern under the overpass on Wasatch that they have reported to the District who will then report it to the City. Lori asked for any other concerns with the Safe Walking Routes; none were noted. Steve stated that a lot of work has gone into this plan in the past so it is pretty well-established.

Margaret made a motion to approve the SNAP plan. Alyssa seconded. All indicated they were in favor of the motion; it passed unanimously. Three parent signatures are needed to approve the SNAP Plan before it is submitted. They will come in to sign.

Changes to the ByLaws

Members were to review the changes to the Bylaws that were needed due to the Codes changing. We will put the vote on the agenda for the next meeting.

Looking ahead to February – Data Review-LAND Trust-TSSP Discussions

There will be a lot to review in February. With the rise in COVID numbers and absences, a lot of tests have had to be made up or rescheduled altogether so getting data has been a challenge.

Lori noted that with current labor shortages, it has been really difficult to fill our interventionist positions that are funded through our Land Trust dollars. Hats off to our achievement coaches for guiding everyone through this staffing shortage and making it work. We are hopeful that next year we will be able to hire more. But we do need to utilize the dollars available to us this year so we will look at some ideas for that at our next meeting. Kwame asked why there is pressure to spend this money and why it can’t be saved. Steve explained that it is the State Legislature that is requiring it. It is set aside in the State Budget to be used each year. Some legislators want to use the Land Trust dollars for other things outside of education, so it is important that it is used accordingly so the dollars don’t get used elsewhere. If someone wanted to pursue changes it would be most appropriate to contact your legislator. Steve noted that another factor in hiring staff is that the amount of pay that can be offered to an interventionist is set by the District, and it is hard to find qualified staff at the pay offered. Therefore it would be appropriate to contact your local school board member with your concerns about this. Haydee noted that the pay issue is widespread in the education system. Kwame noted his frustration and expressed his thanks to teachers and staff in the education system on behalf of his family. Maria noted that the interventionists we need to hire at Midvale and other Title I schools have to pass a “highly qualified” test so it would be appropriate to pay them more. Discussed that it is important to let your school board and legislative representatives know of your concerns. Lori quoted Martin Luther King, Jr., “The time is always right to do what is right.”

Other:

Steve stated that typically at Parent Teacher Conferences we send out the SCC applications out for next year with a deadline prior to our March 21st meeting, such as March 18. For the parents here this year who want to continue, they should submit another application.

Teacher of the Year information is on the website; nominations are due February 4.

Lori also showed members where to review our Land Trust and TSSP plans on the website.

Lori asked members how we would like to do our next meeting; for some it is easier to do a Zoom meeting but most said either way is fine. We will plan a virtual meeting for now.

Meeting adjourn until February 28th

Margaret made a motion to adjourn. Meeting was adjourned at 5:12pm.
